Eco-Schools Programme
Eco-Schools is an international, education award programme for schools. It promotes environmental awareness in a way that links to many curriculum subjects, including citizenship, personal, social and health education (PSHE), and education for sustainable development.
ENCAMS is a campaigning charity working to create a better environment. ENCAMS manages the Eco-Schools programme in the UK.
The Eco-Schools programme involves the whole school – pupils, teachers, non-teaching staff and governors – together with members of the local community- parents, the local authority, the media and local businesses.
Registered schools follow a seven step process which helps them to address a variety of environmental themes ranging from litter and waste to healthy living and biodiversity.
Children are the driving force behind Eco-Schools – they lead the committee and help carry out an annual audit to assess the environmental performance of their school. Through consultation with the rest of the school the pupils decide which environmental themes they wish to address and how they are going to do it.
Schools work towards gaining three awards – Bronze and Silver award and the final Green Flag award which symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity.
