Welcome to the Governors' section!
Meadow Governors
The Governing Body of the Meadow School is made up of representatives of the parents, staff and members of the local community. Our role is to help support the Head and staff of the school in three main areas:
Helping with Strategic Planning: Where should we be heading?
Acting as ‘Critical Friends’: Is this the best way of getting there?
Accountability: Are we using our resources to the greatest benefit of all our children?
All governors are equal on the board. Parent Governors are elected from and by the parent body for a 4 year term. The Head Teacher sits as a governor and the staff body elect one non- teacher and two members of the teaching body to sit. LEA governors are elected by the Local Education Authority and Community governors are invited to join the governing body as a place becomes available sometimes due to links with other local organisations e.g. the parish council or if they are felt to be a good candidate to fill a vacancy. As employers, we follow safer recruitment standards and all new governors should expect to have a list 99 (a quick search to check that the person is not on an offenders’ list) and a CRB check (Criminal Records Bureau search to check that there have been no criminal convictions against that person).
We meet as a full Governing body twice a term and our sub-committees meet once a term. In addition there are working parties on specific projects, educational meetings and an expectation that the governors will, from time to time, after liaison with the Head, visit the school.
In general we are not teachers and our role is not to be like Ofsted and inspect the school. We are there to offer a different view and to ask questions to help the school in its own self monitoring.
Beyond the support of the leadership team, the Governing Body has a duty to appoint a new Head when the post becomes vacant. Complaints should be directed in the first instance to the class teacher or if this is not possible or inappropriate to the Head Teacher.
If you are interested in joining the Governing Body please approach the Headteacher, Miss Rowe to discuss it further and she will put you in contact with a member of the Governing Body. The role can be very rewarding but does demand a considerable time commitment.
