School Council

There has been a School Council at The Meadow for a number of years, but it has only been in its current format since January 2008.

There are 12 elected councillors, all from year 6, three representatives from each house team.

They set their agenda during team assemblies, and then take their ideas to a meeting once or twice a term. The minutes are then taken back to the next team assembly to be shared with the rest of the school where they are discussed and acted on appropriately.

Currently school council meetings are adult led. We are, however, looking to train the next school council to run their own meetings with little adult input.

In the past the school council has had an active role in helping to provide ideas about the running of the school and we hope that we can build on this and move forward in the future.

Examples of ways that school council has made positive contributions to the smooth running of the school:

  • Made decisions about devising a football rota and having a ‘football free Friday’
  • Worked with the Eco Committee and attended meetings, helping the school to achieve Green Flag status.
  • Interviewed prospective teachers (including current Head ) and gave feedback to the interview panel.
  • Chose and bought playground equipment from a given budget.
  • Requested a school bell. This is now used to mark the beginning and end of lessons throughout the day.
  • Requested lockers for the use of pupils. These are now available to all year 5 and 6 pupils.
